The publishing house of Mexico’s Council of Culture and the Arts (Conaculta) is aimed at fostering reading among Mexicans through the edition and promotion of a vast selection of books complementing the Mexican industry. We promote the literary creations of renowned and emerging authors alike. We work in collaboration with independent publishing houses, public institutions, private enterprises and readers in joint ventures that can accelerate the improvement of the industry and increase readership.
Our Publishing Department selects material for publication. Our Publishing Supply supports readership initiatives that focus on specialized audiences and first-time readers. We publish 140 books a year, both independently and in collaboration with other publishing houses. We have 25 editorial collections that cover many genres: history, essay, poetry and art administration among others.
We do more than conventional publishing houses do. This mission is sustained by our reading promotion initiatives.
Our Reading Promotion Department: Sustains more than 4,000 “reading rooms” across the nation
that remain operational thanks to the support of local civil organizations. Operates “parabuses”, bookstands in bus stops, a reading initiative created in Colombia and adapted to Mexico. Offers professionalization certification for reading mediators, in collaboration with local universities. Recognizes the reading programs and initiatives of civic educators and organizations through the initiative “Mexico Reads” (México lee) Manages the Special Reading Promotion Fund in 32 Mexican states. Organizes activities that pay tribute to outstanding national and international authors. Provides information on Mexican writers through the Information Center. Runs the Price System Book Database. Organizes events with young readers in their mother tongues, as well as conferences on e-book and author rights.
Our Historical Projects Department is dedicated to the research and publication of history books. It has two collections: The Creation of Mexico’s Cultural Heritage (1810-2010) and the Mexican Library, both of which vividly store the memory of our country.
The Tierra Adentro Cultural Program and Publishing Fund is the department in charge of the publication and promotion of books produced by young Mexican authors. It annually publishes five issues of a magazine that includes a plaquette of poems and articles on a wide range of topics such as typography, cyberliterature, digital content, body performance and literature and visual poems, among others. It documents the cultural vibrancy of Mexico, contemporary forms of expression, and the work of renowned and emerging artists and writers. Moreover, Tierra Adentro annually publishes 25 books and fosters the literary creation of young authors through various contests in different literary genres each year, such as storytelling, poetry and playwriting.
Our Book Promotion Department participates in national and international book fairs in strategic locations. Also, it organizes the International Children´s book fair, or FILIJ, which is one of the most important initiatives to foster young readership in Latin America. One special feature of this fair is its academic content which, together with ancilliary activities and book presentations, makes this a meeting point for professionals interested in young readers. This year, FILIJ will feature a multimedia pavilion where children will be able to get to know more about e-books and other new ways of reading in the digital era.
The Book Promotion Department fosters various contests and incentives through this fair in order to recognize the work of illustrators, storytellers and authors of children’s books.
